WINTER TIPS

1. Protecting your home during the winter months

  • You’ve probably lagged your pipes, cleared the Autumn leaves from the gutter and the heating is up and running.
  • Secure doors/windows if you are venturing out over the festive season, do security checks when you leave and make it a habit.
  • Multipoint locks are great, a 5-lever mortice deadlock is great for timber doors.
  • Security lights deter most thieves – motion activated are very good, but mind the neighbours.
  • And make it look like someone is home. An alarm system is also a deterrent – make it visible and set it.
  • Security cameras are good – CCTV or smart cameras that you can view through an app. Put outside, put inside, put on your gate/doorbell/post box, put anywhere you like.
  • Again – motion activated is good, yet if the settings are too sensitive, it will send you notifications when they detect something is moving (even a pet).
  • Don’t overshare online – don’t reveal your schedule, where you are going, your protective measures or other personal information. Keep things secure and use your locks.

2. Keeping your car secure

  • Keep your fob/keys safe. Don’t lose them. Get a fob protector online. Don’t leave the car running unattended in the morning to defrost or leave the keys in it when filling up.
  • Don’t leave valuables in the car overnight or out in the open. Double check you’ve locked the car – click again and check the doors.
  • Try and park under a light. If you have a drive, add a light so you can see your vehicle in the dark. Thieves prefer the dark when up to no good.

3. Travelling to the EU after Brexit? Get your Green Cards ready

  • You will need physical proof of car insurance (green card) at the border, a GB sticker and an international driving permit – all physical and present during the journey.
